Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) offers a holistic approach to the production of sustainable food grown in urban areas. In this story, we learn of one urban farmer who successfully uses the CSA model to produce long-term sustainable crops that are fresh, cost efficient to produce, environmentally friendly, and that offers local members a stake in the harvest crops. Agriculture - Corrales NM The village of Corrales has a rich history of farming and agriculture. Still, today we are characterized by breathtaking views of the Sandia Mountains, the smell of freshly mown hay and the scent of apple blossoms on a warm breeze. We like to say there are two classes of people who live in Corrales, those who live here, and those who would like to live here! One special feature of Corrales is our home-grown growers market. This is a colorful, lively and safe place for people to buy food, talk to local farmers, meet neighbors and have coffee together. Food is picked at the peak of freshness and sold a day or two after harvest. This highlights the rural atmosphere of Corrales. It enriches the quality of life for everyone and it helps our farmland to remain productive. Recognized as an agricultural community, we maintain cultivated land. We have recently launched a program to preserve land for open space and agriculture to ensure it doesnt follow the trail of the urban areas that surround us. Livestock is a big part of Corrales, and we encourage activity that harbors 4H projects and pleasure riding by horseback and mule.

During the 20th century, the yield of crop plants has increased dramatically thanks to new technologies and cultivation practices. Genetic engineering- the most powerful of these new technologies- has produced crops that are resistant to insects, viruses, and other pathogens. Within the next decade, scientists will have identified all of the genes necessary program the entire life cycle of crop plants and will understand their functions. We will soon be able to manipulate crops to grow under limiting conditions and to produce an abundance of food to feed an exponentially growing world population.
